Microsoft Authenticator Verifiable Credential Preview
Updated: September 25, 2020
This article explains how to use the Verifiable Credential Preview feature in the Microsoft Authenticator app. Currently, Android is the only mobile operating system supported for this preview feature. iOS is coming soon.
Download Authenticator
In order to get a Verifiable Credential, you will need to download the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator app, based on your mobile phones operating system.
If you already have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your Android device, make sure that it is version 6.2005.3599 or higher. If you need to install it, go to Google Play to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app.)
If you're not currently on your mobile device, you can still get the Microsoft Authenticator app by sending a download link to your phone.
Scan your first Verifiable Credential QR code
Once you have the Authenticator app set up, it's time to get your first Verifiable Credential!
If you don't have any accounts configured, there will be a blue button on the middle of the page that says "Add Account", otherwise tap the plus button in the top right. Then choose 'Other account' and scan the QR code which was created from the developer documentation.
Issuance flow
Now that you've scanned a QR code, you will go through the issuance flow based on the rules file that was set up by your organization. The following is an example of what you should see.
Presentation & Recent Activity
You've successfully received your Verifiable Credential in Authenticator and now it's time to verify with a verifier. Please follow the Request & Verify Credentials part of the documentation to create the QR code. The following is an example of what you should see on the Authenticator side.
A successful presentation should always result in a receipt of the interaction. For now the receipt is a list view, with a receipt details page coming in a later release.
Deactivate Verifiable Credentials
As of version 6.2009.6407, you now can deactivate specific Verifiable Credentials. When you deactivate a card, that card will no longer be viewable from the active card list and will not be presentable when requested by Relying Parties. When a card is deactivated, it is not deleted and you still have the ability to reactivate it and begin using it for presentations.
To deactivate a card:
- Go into the Card Info page by tapping the card.
- On the top right you will see 3 dots which open up the overflow menu with the option to 'Deactivate card'.
- After tapping deactivate you should see a notification confirming the action and the Deactivated badge under the card
- Tap the back button to return to the Active card list.
Now that you've deactivated the card, let's activate the card so it's usable.
- Tap 'View deactivated cards' from the card list view.
- Tap the card you've just deactivated.
- Tap the 3 dots on the top right to open the overflow menu.
- Tap 'Activate'
Now your card is back to a state where it can be used for Presentations.
Delete Verifiable Credentials
As of version 6.2009.6407, you now can delete specific Verifiable Credentials. Deleting is a destructive and irreversible act, so only delete cards that you no longer want to access.
To delete a specific card, you first need to deactivate the card (see the above instructions). Once you've deactivated the card, tap the 3 dots to bring up the overflow menu again and select 'Delete card'. This will bring up a prompt to confirm you want to take this action. By selecting delete, Authenticator will no longer have this card and you will need to go back to the issuer to receive another one.
Turn off preview feature
In the event you would like to disable the Verifiable Credential preview in Microsoft Authenticator, please follow the instructions.
- Navigate to the Accounts tab on the bottom left of the navigation.
- Tap the navigation menu on the top left (if you have accounts) or the top right if you do not have accounts.
- Go into Settings.
- Scroll down to the 'Activate card preview' and disable the toggle.
This will disable the Verifiable Credential preview feature but will not delete your cards. You can re-enable the feature to see the cards again.
Submitting bugs
If you find a bug, please do the following:
- Submit the logs in Authenticator and write down the incident number.
- Write a description of the scenario and post it in the Teams channel along with the incident number from the Authenticator logs.
